Wearing Schedule
Nightguard: Wear every night as directed. Consistency matters — a single missed night won't undo treatment, but inconsistent use accelerates tooth wear and defeats the purpose.
Retainer: Follow your specific instructions. Most patients start with full-time wear and transition to nights-only once stability is confirmed.
Cleaning Your Appliance
Clean every morning after removing:
- Rinse under cool water immediately (never hot — it warps the material)
- Brush gently with a soft toothbrush and mild hand soap or dish soap
- Rinse thoroughly and let air-dry in the case lid before storing
Avoid regular toothpaste — the abrasives scratch the material and create grooves where bacteria grow.
Storage
Always store in the hard case when not in use. Leaving an appliance on a countertop or in a napkin is how most get damaged, lost, or accidentally thrown away.
Keep the case away from pets — dogs are inexplicably drawn to these.
What to Expect Initially
New appliances often feel bulky and may affect speech for the first few nights. This is temporary — most patients adapt within one to two weeks. Minor jaw soreness when waking is also normal as muscles adjust.
Replacement & Repairs
Appliances typically last 3-5 years with proper care. Bring it to every cleaning appointment so we can check fit — teeth shift over time. A loose appliance is an ineffective one. Do not attempt to adjust or repair it yourself.
